Introduction

The Urban Climate Change Research Network (UCCRN) is a global consortium of over 2,000 individuals from over 150 cities dedicated to the analysis of climate change mitigation and adaptation from the urban perspective. Currently, UCCRN is in the process of publishing its Third Assessment Report on Climate Change and Cities (ARC3.3), building on the preceding ARC3.1 (2011) and ARC3.2 (2018). As an assessment of the latest research and new scientific insights, ARC3.3 explores pressing climate issues, transformative solutions, and cross-cutting themes.

Published by Cambridge University Press, the ARC3.3 Series is produced by scholars from cities around the world with the ambition of helping cities further fulfill their role as climate change leaders. Each of the twelve Elements has innovative approaches to mitigation, adaptation, and resilience, highlighting effective strategies for urban action and transformation. The Series invites readers to engage with the latest advancements, empowering researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and students to actively shape the future of urban environments.

Call for ARC3.3 Case Studies (Or Best Practices) on Circular Economy in Cities

The ARC3.3 Circular Economy in Cities Element is opening a call for case studies related to the successful application of circular economy in urban spaces.

ARC3.3 case studies are designed to provide a detailed and action-oriented analysis of a specific climate change topic in a selected city. Case studies have a page length of 3 – 5 pages, are between 1200 – 2000 words, and have 2-3 high-resolution figures/images.

Completed case studies will be uploaded to UCCRN's Case Study Docking Station with DOIs.

Successful examples of circular processes, practices, products, services, and administrations in urban areas are welcomed. Concrete examples from the global north and global south related to urban initiatives and policies that have promoted a shift from linear to circular consumption and production are also welcomed.

In the context of circular economy in urban areas, the suggested topics for this call include, but are not limited to:

  • Concrete examples of Indigenous or cultural circular practices in cities
  • Policy/initiatives/projects/campaigns by public or private entities that supported behavioral shifts from the linear to the circular approach among urban dwellers
  • Innovative approaches to public services or utilities that have successfully shifted to or promoted circularity
  • Successful examples of circular economy in urban-related processes such as waste, infrastructure, housing, utilities, transportation, material and product flow, etc., in formal or informal sectors
  • Circularity measures, indicators, or monitoring practices by the urban municipal administration
  • Circular initiatives in cities that directly or indirectly strengthen the city’s resilience, climate mitigation and adaptation, disaster risk reduction and preparedness
